Happy Holidays to all our friends and family. We can’t believe how fast this year has gone by….only yesterday, we were singing Christmas carols, opening presents and sipping hot chocolate by the tree… hey, wait… that WAS yesterday!  The time has whizzed by and we are reflecting on how blessed we are as we remember all the events of this past year.

Rich is in his 20th year at KITV. The Creative Services Department had a big move within the station. Their new office space is huge, very inviting and “artsy”. He still loves riding his bike all over and exploring new places. Rich and Em are doing well in their business. They went to Idaho for a business trip and got filled and inspired to work hard and serve others. Give them a call or “hey” if you would like to know more about it.

Bryan is a very tall (in our family anyway) 17 year old. He is a Junior at Hanalani Schools and has a challenging course load this year. He is taking Physics, Analytical Trigonometry / Geometry, Chemistry, Robotics, British Lit, Economics & Ethics. This is the year to impress us all. The highlight for Bryan this year was attending a 10 day leadership conference at the University of Maryland. He met students from all over the world and discovered that Electrical Engineering is his niche.

Bradley is a growing 13 year old. He is in the 8th grade at Hanalani and has really found his love for drawing and creating. He has a tough schedule this year too: Algebra, U.S History, Physical Science, Bible Survey, Art, Lit. & Composition, PE. He is doing well and improving on his writing skills. J While Bryan was at his conference, we took Bradley to The Villages, Florida, to spend time with Nana & Papa Fewell. He got to swing a few times at the driving range, play at Hard Knocks (laser tag), eat alligator, swim in the pool… It was a fun and relaxing 10 days. Bradley also went to Maui for their 8th grade trip. He had a great time with all the activities, except on the last day when at the pool he was playing with his friends and broke his big toe. He had to wear this very fashionable boot for 5 weeks. All healed now and ready to play basketball again.

Emily is quite busy these days. She volunteers at Hanalani Schools twice a week in the Campus Store and wherever else they need help. She is also got a new job at Hawaiian Islands Ministries. It’s a part time, temporary position: answering phones, registering people for the upcoming conference among other administrative duties. Even though its only a 3 month gig, Em is very excited to be working along side a great group of people and looking forward to see what the Lord has in store for this ministry and her family.

We are also very much involved with our church, New Hope Central Oahu-Haleiwa Campus. It’s amazing to see what God has done in and through this campus in the last year. We are truly blessed.

Rocks Found At Trestles Beach Ignite In Woman's Pocket, Causing 3rd Degree Burns (Rocks from an area with a nuclear plant, interestingly)

How rocks collected from a southern Orange County beach caught fire in the pocket of a San Clemente woman's cargo shorts, landing her in a hospital with third-degree burns, remained a mystery Thursday.

The 43-year old woman's children picked up the seven orange and green rocks on Saturday at San Onofre State Beach, which is popular with surfers and known locally as Trestles.

The rocks combusted and set the woman's shorts on fire and continued to burn the wood floor of her Avenida Estrella house, according Capt. Marc Stone of the Orange County Fire Authority.

The woman, whose name was not released, was hospitalized at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with third-degree burns to her right thigh and knee, Stone said. He added that the victim "stopped, dropped and rolled" in an effort to douse the flames, and her husband suffered second-degree burns to his hands as he tried to help.

The Orange County Health Care Agency is running tests on the rocks, but results could be days away, Stone said.

Two of the rocks were found to contain phosphorous, which can burn like a road flare when ignited, but the other five were cross-contaminated while in the woman's pocket, according to ABC7.

The rocks were smooth and some were the size of a hamburger patty, while others were small enough to fit in a coffee cup, according to news reports.

"There is phosphorous that naturally occurs on the sand at the beach, but no one has ever heard of pants catching fire," Stone told the Orange County Register. more

Note: Interestingly, San Onofre is home to a often-malfunctioning nuclear power plant that the Coming Crisis regularly reports on. Coincidence? Who knows, but it's a strange correlation for such a mysterious incident.

I encourage you to spend time in your own backyard, helping your children find something of interest.

I wanted to expand that a bit with this post and offer a printable notebook page to use to follow-up your Extraordinary in the Ordinary outdoor time. I challenge you to find at least one thing to take a closer look and to then complete a notebook page or nature journal showing what you learned. My family will be participating in this challenge too!

Goat Nature Study? Where Are The Goats?

No photos of goats but we did spy some awesome insects in the garden.

This week we were hoping to complete the Outdoor Hour Challenge Goat Study. 

We had every intention of finding a real live goat to observe for this challenge...we had several ideas but none of them panned out. We did the next best thing and prepared for the time the opportunity does arise. Mr. B is always up for a research project so this was agreeable to him.



We went through the challenge and narrowed the research to these few things:

1. Read in the Handbook of Nature Study about goats (lesson 65).
2. He viewed the videos linked in the Goat Study Challenge. His favorite? Fainting goats, of course!
3. Research and record information on ruminant animals (animals with four stomachs).

In my experience, after preparing for a particular nature study, we will have an opportunity to use our goat information in the near future. It always seems to work that way, maybe because we are looking for the opportunity with clear eyes.

We had our first swallowtails in the garden this week.

We have had plenty of outdoor time this week as we have worked in the garden, taken a long drive in vineyard country, and walked our trusty Kona dog ( who stood in for our mammal for this study).

We actually started our fern nature study way back in January during our Silent Nature Winter Walk.

This week we walked the same trail to view our ferns. We tried to remember how many ferns there were back in January and there seems to be more ferns now and they are larger. Comparing photos I think we are correct.

I was interested in the Western sword fern but Mr. B was interested in the California Maidenhair fern. Both are plants that we have looked at closely before. The Maidenhair fern is interesting because it has a black stem and looks like lace...sometimes you have to look twice because you think the green parts are floating in air but really they are attached with delicate black stems.

We had a field guide to consult and to glean a few new facts from. Mr. B did a nature journal page for the California Maidenhair fern from our hiking trail. He thought the stalk was a purple/black...I will have to look closer the next time we hike down the trail.

Now do you want to see some of our California wildflowers from further up the trail? We were busy this time stopping and noting all the colorful flowers there are right now.

This is a colorful time of year in our part of the world.

I am keeping a running list of wildflowers seen on this particular trail for the whole year of 2012.

Keeping a list...nothing fancy about this page in my journal.

I just add to my list in my nature journal when we get back from our hike. It is interesting to see the patterns and successions of blooms.

We will be revisiting ferns again this summer as we visit several spots in California that have ferns. I think it will be fun to add to our collection of fern prints that we started back in January.

Updated Wildside-New Garden Arch-Delighted Nature Mama

This was a big week in the garden.

My dear sweet husband surprised me by making a new garden arch for my front yard. We had talked about adding a decorative arch, kicked around a few ideas, and then he added his creative touch. I love the way it makes a sort of  "window frame" to the lower part of the garden. He is going to fill in the bare spot with another sage. The poppies are filling in naturally and I think by next year they will be to this lowest part of the yard.



He added a few of my favorite things....birds, butterflies, vines. (Maybe all this garden beauty will distract me from my neighbor's falling down fence.)


He didn't stop there. He finished up the top terrace of the front yard....he eliminated much of my wildside garden but now it is going to be filled with more wonderful color. Just a note: He used the idea I found on Pinterest to spray a solution of vinegar and water on the weeds before trying to remove them. He sprayed last weekend and let it sit for a week. It was awesome how easy those weeds just hoed out of the ground. He was able to do this entire area in less than an hour! I didn't get a "finished" shot....I will soon.


We are adding more yarrow...a different color this time. The yarrow in our front yard is amazing right now...what a great performer with no water and lots of sunshine.



Maybe someday this new section will be as colorful as the established part of the garden. Here is an image from the top terrace looking down onto the yarrow, lavender, butterfly bush, poppies, and dogwoods. We also added some lamb's ear among the rock garden. I am going to see if spreads too much but it has added a new texture to the yard.

Switch gears now and head to the back butterfly garden.


The columbine is starting to bloom! This is such a wonderfully happy flower that loves my semi shady spot in the butterfly garden. Look at those colors!


How about the shape? Isn't it interesting to see how different the back of the flower looks from the front? I am adding this image to my nature journal...I think watercolors.


Last but not least, I wanted to share another one of my swallowtail visitors to my back garden. This magnificent butterfly spent quite a bit of time yesterday fluttering among my potted plants. He seemed to like the bright pink dianthus the best.


So now you know what I am one delighted nature mama. I love this time of year!

Vine Study - Sweet peas, Hedge bindweed, and Dodder

Vines: Plants that have the habit of climbing upon other plants or upon sides of houses. Stems of vines are not strong enough to stand alone, seeking support to help get their leaves up into the life-giving sunlight. Some vines climb by twisting their stems around the support plant while others have special “holders” which are called tendrils. 

Inside Preparation Work:

• Read these pages in the Handbook of Nature Study to prepare you for this week’s challenge. 1. Sweet Pea: 588-590 (Lesson 164) *vines with tendrils. 2. Hedge Bindweed: 518-520 (Lesson 137) *twining vines. 3. The Dodder or Love Vine: 520-522 (Lesson 138) *tendrils with sucker.
• If you would like to start your sweet peas from seed, follow the instructions in Lesson 164. This study could then continue into the summer months and end in a study of the sweet pea flower using Lesson 164.
• Read this page and view the images: How Vines Climb. You can watch these videos on YouTube: Twining Motion of Vines, Morning Glory Stop Motion, Time Lapse of Cucumber Tendril (Beware: 1812 Overture plays loudly.)

Outdoor Hour Time:

• Use your outdoor time for this challenge to explore your yard and neighborhood looking for vines of any kind. Don’t worry if you can’t find a sweet pea, dodder, or hedge bindweed but apply your knowledge and vocabulary to any vines you do find. 
• Make sure to observe closely how the vine climbs. If the vine is a twining vine, note which direction the vine wraps itself around the support plant. If the vine has tendrils, note their color, size, and direction.
• Optional: Plant sweet pea or morning glory seeds for your own vines to observe over the next few months.

Follow-Up Activity:

• Follow up your outdoor time with the opportunity to record an entry in your nature journal with your vine observations. Ebook Users: You can use the vocabulary found on the chart in the ebook.
• Advanced study: Research more vines and how they climb (How Plants Climb). Summarize your information in your nature journal.
• Advanced study: Make your own time lapse video of a vine twining or using its tendrils.
• If you planted sweet pea or morning glory seeds, continue to record their growth over the next few months in your nature journal.

Outdoor Hour Challenge: Winter Weather Walk; Silent Walk Challenge

We started our Outdoor Hour Challenge by discussing the winter challenge series and filling out the Winter Wonder notebooking pages from Harmony Arts Mom's Winter Challenge 2 series.

We started our Nature Study by looking over the Winter Wonder notebooking pages and filling them in. Then I explained the Silent Walk Challenge that we were about to undertake. The boys were not keen on the idea at first, but then the older one thought of a way that would make it more fun for him: duct tape! So the boys all administered duct tape, with the sweet princess declining.
Then the youngest decided to stay home with his mom, and then there were three. We first headed to the big oak (that makes me think of the tree we often see when watching "Little House on the Prairie" old episodes).
And it became clear that this would be a walk to challenge my zoom lens, because the kids were in a mood to run! And I just couldn't keep up. I also was going back and forth between wanting to catch the size of the tree in comparison to the child and wanting to capture photos of the child.
So point of interest #2 was a puddle in the field. The edges had a thin layer of ice. The tap, tap of the foot seemed to say, "Oh look! It's so thin it breaks under my weight!" (Yeah, could you please keep your shoes dry? Please?)

Barely time for me to catch up, and their off at a run again. So far, nature items spotted: oak tree, ice on puddle.
So, back to the notebooking page, man-made items spotted: tennis court, bridge...

 man-made items: historic barn; nature items: conifer trees and
a gnarly old oak!

 Then there was this amazing tree on the slope of a hill. It offered so much fodder of interest. It's angle made its trunk climbable to a certain extent.


Its size was massive, and around on the other side of it was makes it what I call a "Peter Pan tree", as in a tree that offers the imagination the possibility that Peter Pan's cave might be underneath and this might be the secret entrance door...
Around the time I spotted the man-hole cover in the middle of the field, my son was discovering the drainage ditch above, which actually became an item of interest for the three for about ten minutes of silent plan and climbing. In the distance, up the hill, there was one more tree of interest, possibly a maple:And then my camera gave me the message that we all dread: "Recharge Your Battery!" - and it would not talk to me any more.
So, we finished the walk, went home, and filled out the Notebooking Pages from Harmony Arts Mom's Winter Outdoor Hour Challenges #2.
