Russian news agencies say the navy is sending another ship to the Syrian port of Tartus, where Russia has a naval base.
The reports Sunday by the ITAR-Tass and Interfax news agency cited an unidentified official in the military general staff as saying the Novocherkassk, a large landing ship, has set sail from the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk. The ship is expected to arrive in the Tartus area in early January.
The reports gave no information on the ship's intent. But Russian diplomats have said that Moscow is preparing a plan to evacuate thousands of Russians from Syria if necessary. The Defense Ministry announced two weeks ago that several ships were being dispatched to the Mediterranean.

So, I bought this soap dispenser at Target a few months ago. In the store with all the other ones it looked great, but when I put it on the edge of my kitchen sink, it just looked like a ketchup bottle.
I wasn't sure what to do, since it worked fine, it just looked weird. I eventually got another soap dispenser, and put this one away to think about it.
The other day I was getting some vinyl cut for some Christmas Decorations, that had cute little snow flakes on it, when it hit me--I could get some extra snowflakes cut and turn my ketchup bottle thing into something that would be cute in my kitchen throughout the winter.
Here is how it turned out!

House finches can seem common at the feeders...oh, just another finch. But, when you see these colored birds through the eye of a camera, you realize they are not just another bird. They come in varying shades of pink, orange, red, and purple...they come day after day and provide a happy bird song (listen on All About Birds to hear the sweet sounds of a finch).
Our backyard Anna's hummingbirds are still at the feeders every day. They have a particular tree they sit in and most days it is on the same little branch that hangs over one end of our deck. I can hear them making their little chattering noises whenever I am outside. In this image the feathers look black but it is just the way the light is hitting him. If he tilts his head in just the right way or the sun hits him just right, his chin and throat are the most brilliant pink and his body is a dazzling green. I always thought that hummingbirds were delicate creatures but I have seen them at my feeder in the pouring rain and when we have snow. All About Birds says that they weigh the same as a nickel....imagine that!
The return of the Dark eyed junco is complete for the season. We started having one or two a day under the feeders but now I am counting 12-20 every day. They mostly poke around under the seed feeders to glean some food but I have noticed that they are hanging out at the suet feeder as well. They do give the woodpeckers first chance at the suet but as soon as the woodpecker flies away, they hop on and have a meal.
Our Northern Mockingbirds make daily appearances at the berry vines in our front yard. I read on All About Birds that they switch to an almost all berry diet in the fall and winter. The other fact I learned about the mockingbird is that they don't sing at this time of the year. The website says that they sing from February to August and then from September to early November. Isn't that interesting? I am going to record the dates I hear them sing in my neighborhood...a little extra project for me.
The Nuttall's woodpecker is a frequent diner at the suet feeder. We seem to have a female that is rather shy but I have observed her quite a bit as she hops up and down the trees near the feeder. She shares the feeder many times with the little White-breasted nuthatches.
The excitement this season is that we appear to have a wintering Red-breasted nuthatch who comes daily to the trees outside my window. At first I thought he was my usual White-breasted nuthatch but I read online that the Red-breasted has an eye stripe....sure enough, our nuthatch had an eyestripe. He is super quick and I have yet to capture a clear image but you can see in this one that he definitely has an eyestripe! Hopefully I will get a good image of him for my nature journal sometime this winter.
Project Feederwatch has helped bring my bird observation skills to the next level. In just a few minutes a day, I have learned so much more about the bird life right outside my window. What a gift this activity gives...hopefully you enjoy seeing my bird friends and are inspired to start learning about your own backyard birds.

The Outdoor Hour Challenges this month focuses on the weather and we have been noting how the weather affects the birds in our yard. We have had ice on the birdbaths quite a few mornings this week and if I don't go out and break it up, the birds skid around on it which makes me laugh.

Weather Grid Nature Study - New Nature Journal Idea

Our week has been marked by frosty temperatures...which make for beautiful early morning treasures. Now each morning when I go out to check the bird feeders and the bird bath I need to bundle up with gloves and hat...my nose still gets frosty cold.
Using the December Newsletter Weather Grid Study, our family has been trying to notice the weather and its effects on the plants and wildlife. This doesn't seem much like a formal study but just part of our everyday routine to notice the temperature, the clouds, the forecast.

Reading Angie's entry for the up-coming blog carnival, I noticed that her son had cut the Weather Study Grid into squares to adhere into his journal. I love this idea! So thanks to Angie's family I have a cool new way to record the grid study in my nature journal.
It seemed like such a natural way to customize my nature journal page. Once I had the squares cut out, I had the idea to print a few of my weather related images from the month in wallet-sized photos and then add those to my page.

After that, I added a few more of my thoughts about our weather study and voila! This is a perfect nature journal entry for this part of our weather study. Using these simple steps you end up with a journal page that anyone can make!

Attorney General Secretly Granted Gov. Ability to Develop and Store Dossiers on Innocent Americans

In a secret government agreement granted without approval or debate from lawmakers, the U.S. attorney general recently gave the National Counterterrorism Center sweeping new powers to store dossiers on U.S. citizens, even if they are not suspected of a crime, according to a news report.
Earlier this year, Attorney General Eric Holder granted the center the ability to copy entire government databases holding information on flight records, casino-employee lists, the names of Americans hosting foreign-exchange students and other data, and to store it for up to five years, even without suspicion that someone in the database has committed a crime, according to the Wall Street Journal, which broke the story.
Whereas previously the law prohibited the center from storing data compilations on U.S. citizens unless they were suspected of terrorist activity or were relevant to an ongoing terrorism investigation, the new powers give the center the ability to not only collect and store vast databases of information but also to trawl through and analyze it for suspicious patterns of behavior in order to uncover activity that could launch an investigation.

Family Seasons Nature Study Walk - Winter Edition

A week ago, our family took a trip up to the mountains to spend some time together and enjoy the beauty of an alpine lake. I thought this would be the perfect time to take a Seasonal Weather walk as part of the Outdoor Hour Challenge. The weekend started off with rain, sunshine, and then rainbows. We actually saw a double rainbow a couple of times....amazing!
Boy, did we have weather! The rain turned to snow and dusted the landscape with clean bright snow. The ducks and geese in the lake didn't seem to mind much. The clouds covered the mountains in the distance but left us with a pocket of sunshine to get out into and explore.
We would watch for the sun to come out, taking advantage of the time to warm up in the bright mountain sunshine and see some more rainbows.
The snow would really fall at times and we enjoyed the beauty of it...we didn't have to go outside unless we wanted to do so. Mr. A met up with some friends and went snowboarding one of the days we were up at the lake....crazy teenage snowboarders. (Sorry Mr. T that you dislocated your shoulder.)
This was pretty much the pattern for our whole weekend...rainbows and sunshine...snowing in the distance.
One of the days we took a drive around the lake to a spot we like to hike at but the wind was blowing so very hard that just getting out of the car was difficult. This video is just showing how much the large pines were swaying back and forth in the gusts of wind...it also was really super loud just like on the video. Amazing power of the wind! We experienced 50 mph winds (gusts higher than that).
It was hard to even stand up in the blasts of wind....we ended up taking a short hike over to Fallen Leaf Lake where the waves were high enough you could have surfed. This lake is usually calm, flat, and crystal blue but on this day it looked more like the gray ocean. Mr. D bundled up against the wind...it really was that cold!

While we were up enjoying the lakes of the Sierra, back at home the rain gauge was getting filled up. We had to dump it since it was overflowing at 8 inches! There was flooding and our basement sump pump didn't work once the power went off....wet floors and furniture. The phones were out for a week and so was our DSL. The weather really gave us something to talk about this past week...more than I anticipated.

Thousands of squid carcasses wash up on California beaches: Is toxic algae to blame for disorientating the sea creatures leading to mass suicide?

Marine biologists are working to uncover what caused several thousand Humboldt squid to wash ashore along the Santa Cruz County shoreline on Sunday.
Thousands of squid carcasses are littering the 12 mile stretch of coastline from Aptos to Watsonville, where the high tide may have had something do to with the sea creatures essentially committing mass suicide.
The general public is advised by scientists not to touch or eat the squid, as they may contain dangerous toxins.

Jacob Tyler Roberts Killed two People Before shooting himself in Shopping Mall Massacre

The gunman who killed two innocent victims after opening fire at an Oregon shopping mall on Tuesday afternoon has been identified as a 22-year-old man who stole the weapon from a friend the day before the massacre.
Jacob Tyler Roberts, wearing a load-bearing vest and a mask like that from horror movie Friday the 13th, ran into Clackamas Town Center near Portland and opened fire with the stolen AR15 rifle.
He struck three people at random in the food court, Cindy Ann Yuille, 54, and married father-of-two Steven Mathew Forsyth, 45, and critically injuring 15-year-old Kristina Shevchenko.

McAfee Released From Jail, Heading To US

Anti-virus software pioneer John McAfee is released from prison in Guatemala and is due to catch a flight to the US.
A Guatemalan immigration official said the 67-year-old was being deported after his arrest a week ago.
McAfee, who is wanted for questioning in Belize over the murder of his neighbour, had been on the run for almost a month.

Google's tax avoidance is called 'capitalism', says chairman Eric Schmidt

Google chairman Eric Schmidt has insisted that he is "very proud" of the company's tax structure, and said that measures to lower its payments were just "capitalism".
Mr Schmidt's comments risk inflaming the row over the amount of tax multinationals pay, after it emerged that Google funnelled $9.8bn (£6.07bn) of revenues from international subsidiaries into Bermuda last year in order to halve its tax bill.
However, Mr Schmidt defended the company's legitimate tax arrangements. “We pay lots of taxes; we pay them in the legally prescribed ways,” he told Bloomberg. “I am very proud of the structure that we set up. We did it based on the incentives that the governments offered us to operate.”
“It’s called capitalism,” he said. “We are proudly capitalistic. I’m not confused about this.”
In Britain Vince Cable was unimpressed by Mr Schmidt’s views. The Business Secretary told The Daily Telegraph: “It may well be [capitalism] but it’s certainly not the job of governments to accommodate it.”
A Californian pressure group called Consumer Watchdog wrote to the Senate’s Finance Committee demanding a hearing on Google’s “global tax avoidance strategies”.

British police are hunting for a pub landlord after £30,000 disappeared from a Christmas fund.
Malcolm Levesconte, 59, was last seen on Sunday at the Royal Oak pub in Shrewton, near Salisbury, Wiltshire Police said.
Later that evening, he boarded a ferry at Portsmouth to St Malo in France.
The spokesman said: "Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Mr Levesconte is asked to contact Salisbury CID on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously."

In September I was informed that I would have the opportunity to review a book published by Grace & Truth Books, entitled Collector's Edition: 7 favorite 18th-century children's stories, and is a collection for children ages 8-14.
I was reviewing many products simultaneously, and as I was reviewing my list of products and how I was doing working through them, I realized I had never received my copy of the book! We notified the company, and they quickly got a copy to me. That said, however, I have not had the book as long as I should have, and sadly have not read as much of it as I would like to have read for this review. Nevertheless, I believe I can give a good review with the amount that we have read.
The Collector's Edition is a paperback book, measuring 5" x 7", 1/2" thick, with 166 pages. It is part of The Children's Heritage Collection by Grace & Truth Books. This is a collection of stories originally published in the 1800's by the American Tract Society.
As the title states, the book contains seven children's stories.
I wanted to use these stories as a nice time when I could snuggle up with my son, like at bedtime, and just read rich wonderful stories together. Unfortunately, it's been a long time since bedtime reading has been a practice for me. Sometimes Daddy does that, but Mom has usually been reading out loud all day and doesn't want to read again at bedtime. Also, for JD, Mom reads out loud when it is a school assignment. He said, "It doesn't feel like snuggle, cuddle, reading time. It feels like schoolwork, a homework assignment. I don't want to do it." Basically, it also amounted to, "I'd rather read... (this other book)..." So, since I really did want to test out this book on him, it really did become one more book I was reading during the day. That wasn't my intention, but it is what it is.
Now also as an explanation, my son is very difficult to please. If you read through many of my previous reviews, they begin to look like a commercial for Life Cereal from the 1970's: "Give it to Mikey. He won't eat it; he hates everything!" That has been my son. My reviews have read like, "It's a good product. My son hates it, but I like it."
That said, I present to you this positive praise: My son seems to like these stories. What that means is he is not groaning and complaining when it is time to read them. I tell him I am going to read the next story for the day, and he is like, "Okay." And if you were familiar with my son, you'd probably be saying, "Wow! They must be good!" I certainly am not experiencing anything like him asking for one more chapter, or one more story, but it is such a pleasant thing to have him not complaining, like he is with some of the other books I am requiring him to work through.
The content and messages in these stories are meaningful, without being too sickly sweet, or too preachy. I have really enjoyed these stories. They are quaint and sweet, and convey values I want to convey, but as a story where someone else is conveying the values, which is reinforcement of my values, rather than my son experiencing any more instances of, "Mom says..." or "Mom thinks..." I love coming across new reading materials the emphasize values I share.
I will not be reading the last story, "The Death of Emily", to my son. I previewed it, and he would hate it. He has a very tender heart. He knows death exists in the world, and has experienced death of grandparents (and can see death of his aunt on the horizon). He can read certain types of stories that deal with death, but not the type where you are lead to love the person in the story, and then they die. I've come to accept that this is the way he is, and have decided I don't need to force him to "get over it"; it is just who he is. There will be enough real death in his immediate future (aunt, other grandparents), and other stories dealing with death. It is okay to let him skip certain stories that I might have gone ahead and read with a sibling.
The Grace & Truth Collector's Edition normally sells for $7.50, but is currently on sale for $6.50. It might make a nice Christmas present for your nieces or nephews (or your brothers or sisters to read to your nieces or nephews), or it might make a nice addition to your own library to add to your bedtime reading books. For the price, this is a very nice book.
